The Pick Up Artist. Season 2

Is anyone else looking forward to seeing reality TV hit a new low? Well join me in watching The Pick Up Artist, Season 2, to be screened on VH1 in September this year.

Some of you may remember the god awful first series which saw Mystery sell the last of his credibility down river aided by his two wings, both of whom were seemingly devoid of any personality whatsoever. Each episode of the last series of The Pick Up Artist involved Mystery and his stooges smugly judging the attempts of the AFC’s as they competed to win the title of ‘Master Pick Up Artist’.

It’s hard to know how much the contestants will have learned having been schooled by J Dog, whose keeerazy hairstyle resembles the finished product of a primary school art class, a far cry from the ‘rockstar look’ he claims on his website. He’s also English, and speaking from experience it is not difficult for an English person to get laid in America. You don’t need to have tight game, as opening your mouth is usually enough to extract squeals of delight and admiration from American girls.

The next purveyor of Mystery Method craft is Matador, a man for whom the word ’sleazy’ may well have been invented for. Dressed in his safety net of all black (maybe he hadn’t read Mystery PUA’s thoughts on peacocking), Matador spent most of the last series saying very little whilst standing around looking somewhat glum, similar to a spoilt fat child who’s been last to be picked for a five-a-side kick about.

As a keen supporter of The Game and pick up, I was disappointed to see Mystery PUA take such an easy route on The Pick Up Artist. At some points of the show he was actually quite rude to the contestants, greeting them with the opening phrase, ‘look what the cat dragged in’. It seemed like more of an opportunity to flex his egotistical muscles than offering any kind of support to a group of shy people, none of whom would have had the confidence to answer back in the presence of such a prestigious guru.

The fact is, the first series taught nothing about pickup, and was just another reality TV show, with any value painstakingly extracted by the powers at be. Is Mystery PUA one of the best pick up artists in the world? At one stage of his life I’m sure he was. Is the Mystery Method still of value? Yes, if taught by the right people.

So what can we expect from the second series? No doubt the contestants will be geekier, and more outrageously socially inadequate, a number of whom will break down in front of the camera at some point, gushing about how Mystery PUA has ‘opened their eyes’ after they’ve just introduced themselves to a girl for the first time in their lives.

Perhaps J Dog will shock us all by showing just how absurd a hairstyle can be for a man approaching middle age. Maybe Matador might actually risk drowning in his own hair gel? Who knows? I would say that I’ve got my sky plus and notebook ready in anticipation of the second series of The Pick Up Artist, but that would be a massive lie.

    Hey Brad,

I have to completely agree with your post, you hit the nail right on the head. I have had some experience with reality TV before and I believe Mystery is being rude to just add some drama and conflict to the show. But having said that I think the program is awful, it just goes to show that it didn’t fly over in the UK because it was shown on MTV at like !2 midnight. Plus it really sucks that the guys leave and it’s like a competition because they are all horrible with women and the guys that leave are still going to be horrible so whats the point!??

Anyway keep up the good work, rock on dude!

Brad, After reading your article, i am beinning to see the whole mystery method thing in a different light. I was a fan of the mystery method. My honest opinion when first watched the series in youtube was that, its a great concept and i would be able to see some of the mystery method in action.
There are some of the thing i really dont understand, peacocking theory is just really weird. i cannot imagine someone following the mystery method walking around in the streets of london with a goggle on their top-hat.
i am looking to see if they do anything different this series, for example, the elimination thing is just horrible and i completely agree with what Scott N said about it. These guys are bad at pick-up and by getting eliminated they are not going to be any better.

Although if the show was about all the PUAs who are followers of mystery method and the guys are really good at what they did then it would have been a much more interesting show to watch. Ramon

Yeh - It’s very buy very one sided. I’ll admit, it’s not the best PR shot - but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t slept with hot women! Maybe he didn’t want to have a super hot babe in the PR pic because he didn’t want to raise expectations too much? (haha) maybe he really sees that girl as beautiful? Maybe HE LIKES HER FOR WHO SHE REALLY IS ON THE INSIDE!!! HAVE YOU THOUGHT OF THAT!! …. It’s unlikely someone who’s been around that long is going to have no game - and even if he doesn’t? If the stuff he’s teaching is getting guys laid then … it’s not that bad!

She does look a bit like a warpig though…. I’ll give you that…

Bah. Can’t we all just get along?

The first season of the PUA contestants are fake. They are either actors, models or dancers. Do a bit of research on the net, there are actually profile pics of them. so… no miracle.. :(
